The initiative for better awareness at the water

Welcome to the Water Experience Academy

“We all want to have a good and safe time at the water! However, in recent years the number of people unable to swim has continued to grow. With our initiative, we are helping to create more awareness for water safety and to improve swimming skills also in the open water. Our pilot event in July 2022 – the “Day of Action for freedom and safety in the water” – was so successful that we are expanding our work significantly in 2023 with existing and new partners. We look forward to welcoming everyone who wants to be part of this important issue!”

Our mission & vision

The goal of the initiative is to help people have a good time in and on the water by promoting awareness for the water and teaching people how to stay safe in the water. We are developing a wide range of programs to help people of any age to safely experience the water and identify hazards and risks. We focus on learning how to swim and giving people access to open water areas, with all of their unique facets. Learning to swim should not be about completing a technical course – instead, it should be about feeling completely confident in the open water. This confidence opens up the wonderful world of water sports to participants. It is an important way to prevent drowning, one of the most common accidental causes of death.

Days of Action for more freedom and safety in the water

Together with schools, for our children: Get out of the laboratory conditions in the swimming pool and go outside. The open water is an exciting place to discover for the schoolchildren. The focus is on developing water skills and having lots of fun. In addition, the school event gives an insight into the nature and environment of the local waters, strengthens team spirit and should inspire to spend more time outdoors. This year the following action days will take place:

• June 21, 2023 Niegripper See Burg (bei Magdeburg)
• June 27, 2023 Epplesee Rheinstetten
• June 28, 2023 Epplesee Rheinstetten
• June 29, 2023 Sieben-Erlen-See Neuthard
• July 06, 2023 Plüderhausen Badesee
• July 11, 2023 Dutenhofener See Gießen
• July 13, 2023 Bodensee Konstanz

REVIEW 2022

Learn to swim in open water, prevent drowning

The easiest way to learn is to have fun - and this also applies to swimming: less of the technical discourse and more learning and experiencing. To be able to move about safely in open water, to recognize risks and dangers, and to know how to behave in an emergency situation are the goals of the “Water Experience Academy”.

Continuous open water swimming courses

In order to be able to move freely and safely in open water and to use existing resources in Germany, it is important to offer swimming courses in open water such as lakes in the future. Adapted to the corresponding conditions of the location, the first tests in open water will take place this year with our swimming instructors. A specially developed RESTUBE pool is used as a boundary to the open water. This enables the participants to overcome their fears and learning to swim in open water remains manageable and safe - for participants and swimming instructors.

“Water is a very special element for me. To me, swimming in open water means one thing above all: an incredibly strong feeling of freedom - stroke after stroke. With the Water Experience Academy, we want to make open water a fun experience for everyone.”

Klaus Albrecht

Principal Heinz-Barth-Schule Wettersbach & Head of the BSS Primary School Team at ZSL

"With the Water Experience Academy, a responsible concept is now available that bridges the gap between swimming lessons and opportunities for safe recreational activities on the water through an interesting event in a school context.”

Fabienne Meier

Educational Expert / M.Sc. Sport and Exercise Science

“Enabling and promoting safe swimming in open water - that’s what I’m committed to. Spending time in and around water provides optimal opportunities to develop life skills. To me, moving about in water represents courage and sheer vitality!”

Swantje Scharenberg

Manager and CEO of FoSS

“Children essentially discover their environment through movement. Dealing with water is part of growing up healthy from birth. Nevertheless, it is important to acquire risk competence related to the movement and habitat of water at an early stage through positive experience.”
